Where It All Begins
Today’s key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com
‘What do you mean, ‘If I can’?’ Jesus asked. ‘Anything is possible if a person believes.’ - Mark 9:23 (NLT)
Our journey of faith always starts in one place, believing that God can.
In Mark 9, we meet a father desperate to see his son delivered from torment. After trying everything and even failing to find help from Jesus’ disciples, he turns to Jesus and says, “Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.” Jesus’ response is both compassionate and challenging: “If I can? Anything is possible if a person believes.” With that, He brought the father back to where it all begins, faith in God’s ability.
This is the foundation of victorious Christian living: believing that God is not only able, but also willing. Hebrews 11:6 affirms this truth, saying, “Anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him.” The “He is” in that verse echoes God’s own words to Moses, “I AM”, a reminder that God is ever-present, all-powerful, and forever faithful.
Just like learning the personal backstories of our nation’s founders helps us understand what drove them, digging deeper into God’s character fuels our faith. When we believe He is who He says He is, our Healer, Provider, Redeemer, then our confidence in Him grows, and we begin to experience what Jesus called the “abundant life” (John 10:10).
If you're feeling like the father in Mark 9, helpless, weary, unsure, let your heart return to where it all begins: believing He can. He still heals. He still saves. He still delivers. He is not done writing your story.
Reflection Question: Do you truly believe that God is both able and willing to move in your life today?
Prayer: Father, thank You that You are both powerful and loving. Help me to trust that You can and will work on my behalf. Strengthen my faith to believe You for the impossible. I surrender my doubts to You and choose to rest in the truth of who You are. In Jesus Name, Amen.
