Treasures That Last

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… Matthew 6:19-20 (NIV)

Life often tempts us to chase what feels urgent, visible, or rewarding right now. In Genesis, we see Hagar and Sarai navigating human plans and struggles. Abraham and Sarah try to take matters into their own hands instead of fully trusting God’s timing, which leads to conflict and pain. Human solutions can never give the lasting peace that God’s wisdom provides.

Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6 reminds us to set our hearts on what lasts. Earthly treasures, money, status, approval, are temporary and fragile. But the things God calls us to, love, faithfulness, mercy, generosity, cannot be taken away. When we align our choices with His priorities, we invest in life that truly endures.

Psalm 7 shows us another dimension of trust. David cries out for justice and protection, recognizing that God is his ultimate defender. Even in the face of opposition or danger, God provides refuge and delivers those who seek Him. Trusting God over worldly gain brings both peace and safety for our souls.

Proverbs 2 encourages us to actively pursue wisdom: ā€œIf you seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.ā€ Choosing God’s ways over shortcuts, over worldly distractions, leads to insight, protection, and true fulfillment.

Today, you can ask God to reorder your priorities. To help you invest in what lasts, to trust His timing, and to follow His guidance over your own. The treasures He calls us to are eternal.

Reflection Question: What is one area of your life where you may be chasing temporary rewards instead of God’s lasting treasure?

Prayer: Lord, help me to keep my heart focused on what truly matters. Teach me to invest in the treasures of Your kingdom and trust Your timing. Protect me from distractions and guide my choices so that my life reflects Your wisdom and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
