The Simple Gospel

Today’s key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com

Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.’ And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. - Luke 23:34

In a world where everything seems to need a fancy explanation, it’s easy to think the Gospel should be complicated too. We might feel like it has to be “deep” or “theologically rich” to make an impact. But here’s the thing, Jesus’ life and message were refreshingly simple. The Good News is way simpler than we often make it out to be.

Think about Barabbas for a second. He was guilty, deserved to die, and yet, he was set free. Why? Because Jesus took his place. In that moment, Barabbas wasn’t just some random criminal. He was a picture of all of us. Jesus took our place on that cross, and like Barabbas, we get freedom we didn’t earn. There’s nothing complicated about that, it’s a beautiful, simple truth. Jesus, innocent and pure, died for the guilty so that we could live.

Sometimes we overthink the Gospel. We add layers of complexity when all it really takes is realizing what Jesus did for us: He died so we could live. That’s it. The Gospel is so simple that even a child can grasp it. It’s all about grace, something we don’t deserve, but get anyway because of Jesus.

Today, let’s just sit in that simplicity. Jesus died in our place, and because of that, we’re forgiven, set free, and promised eternal life. There’s nothing we need to add to that, it’s simply just that simple.

Reflection Question: How can you simplify your understanding of the Gospel today? Is there any ways you’ve made it harder than it needs to be?

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for making the Gospel so simple and clear. Help me to grasp it with a fresh perspective today and to never take Your sacrifice for granted. Thank You for setting me free. In Jesus Name, Amen.
