The Precedent

From Today's Reading At BibleInAYearOnline.com

For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.” - Romans 10:10 NLT

We hear the word “precedent” when people talk about law or government. It means something has already happened that sets the tone for what comes next. It’s a model, a foundation, a reason to stand confidently. And when it comes to our faith, Paul points us to a powerful precedent that changes everything.

Romans 10:10 tells us that believing in your heart makes you right with God and speaking it out brings salvation. That might sound bold, even too simple. But Paul isn’t pulling this out of thin air. He’s leaning on something ancient, something unshakable, God’s relationship with Abraham. Long before there was a law or a system, there was a promise. Abraham believed God, and that belief was counted as righteousness. That’s the precedent.

Paul brings it full circle in Romans 10:9. If you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and declare that He is Lord, you will be saved. That’s not wishful thinking. That’s the unchanging precedent of grace at work. And this salvation, it’s more than just a ticket to Heaven. The original Greek word sozo means to be rescued, healed, restored, protected, and made whole. It’s the full package of God’s goodness, wrapped in grace, and received by faith.

So today, whatever feels broken, uncertain, or out of reach in your life, know this: you have every reason to believe for more. Not because of what you’ve done, but because of what He already did. The precedent has been set. And you’re invited to receive.

Reflection Question: What area of your life needs the healing, restoring, saving grace of Jesus today?

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for making a way for me to be whole. Thank You for the unshakable precedent of Your grace. Help me to trust what You’ve already done and to receive all that You freely offer. I believe, and I declare, You are Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
