The Power of Surrender
“Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’” Acts 9:17 (NLT)
Saul’s encounter on the road to Damascus is one of the most dramatic moments in the Bible. Blinded by a bright light, he heard the voice of Jesus asking, “Why are you persecuting me?” In that moment, Saul’s life was flipped upside down. The man who had zealously hunted Christians was now being hunted by the very God he once opposed.
But the story doesn’t end with Saul’s blindness. It is in his moments of helplessness that God sent Ananias, a believer who was initially hesitant but obedient. Ananias didn’t just pray for Saul’s physical healing, he welcomed him into the family of God. Saul’s transformation began when he surrendered, trusting not only in the power of God but in the love and support of fellow believers. He couldn’t change himself, but God could change him.
Sometimes, we’re like Saul, we encounter God’s truth, and it changes everything. But it’s in the surrender, in allowing God to work through others, that we experience complete transformation. We are not meant to go through this process alone.
Psalm 131 speaks of the quiet, humble surrender of the soul: “I have calmed and quieted my soul.” This is what it takes to fully experience the power of transformation, trusting God to do the work in His time, not ours.
Reflection Question: How can you surrender more fully to God’s work in your life, trusting in His timing and the support of others?
Prayer: Lord, I surrender my life to You. Help me trust in Your power to transform me. Calm my soul and give me the strength to lean on You and others during this process. I know You are working in me, and I trust Your plan. In Jesus’ name, amen.
