The Fear of the Lord
Come, my children, and listen to me, and I will teach you to fear the Lord. - Psalm 34:11 (NLT)
There’s a beautiful kind of fear, the kind that draws us closer to God rather than pushing us away. That’s the fear David speaks of in Psalm 34. It’s not fear that makes us hide or shrink back, but reverence, awe, and deep respect that lead to trust and intimacy with God.
David’s invitation sounds like a father calling his children close: “Come near, I have something important to share.” What he shares isn’t just a religious idea, but a way of life that brings peace, joy, and freedom.
When we walk in the fear of the Lord, we see life more clearly. Our decisions flow from wisdom, not pressure. We become aware of God’s presence, and that shapes how we speak, respond, and love.
Paul echoes this in 1 Corinthians 10, reminding believers to live thoughtfully, knowing love and reverence for God guide our choices.
The fear of the Lord isn’t about earning love, we already have God’s love. It’s about living from it, letting that awe settle our hearts and guide our steps.
Reflection Question: What would it look like for you to walk in the fear of the Lord today, not with dread, but with awe and trust?
Prayer: Father, thank You for inviting me into a relationship where reverence brings me closer to You. Help me to live today with a heart that honors You, not out of fear of punishment, but from a place of love and trust. Teach me what it means to walk in holy fear. In Jesus name, Amen.
