The Father's Heart
Today’s key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com
The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, ‘Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.’ - Exodus 34:6 (NLT)
When God chose to reveal His name and nature to Moses, He didn’t begin with power or judgment. He began with His heart. Exodus 34:6 is one of the clearest self-descriptions God gives in all of Scripture, and every word matters. He is compassionate. He is merciful. He is slow to anger. He is filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.
This verse tells us that mercy is not something God occasionally shows, it is who He is. Compassion flows from His very nature. His patience is intentional, not reluctant. Even His faithfulness is described as unfailing, meaning it does not run out when we fail or fall short. This is the God who invites us into relationship, not fear.
Too often we approach God expecting disappointment, correction, or distance. But Exodus 34:6 reminds us that when God draws near, He comes with grace. He meets us with steadfast love and covenant faithfulness. His heart is not hardened toward us; it is moved by compassion.
Today, let this truth reshape how you see God. You are not coming before someone easily angered or quick to turn away. You are coming before a Father whose mercy is abundant and whose love is steady. When you rest in who He truly is, trust grows, fear fades, and freedom follows.
Reflection Question: What stands out to you most about God’s character in this verse, and how does it influence the way you relate to Him today?
Prayer: Father, thank You for revealing Your heart as compassionate, merciful, and faithful. Help me to trust who You say You are and to live each day grounded in Your unfailing love. Shape my heart to reflect Yours as I walk with You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
