The Difference

Today’s key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com

Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother. - Mark 3:35 (NLT)

In Numbers 14–16, Israel’s rebellion against God had reached a breaking point. From grumbling in the wilderness to refusing to enter the Promised Land, their actions tested God’s patience. But amidst their disobedience, a faithful few stood apart, Moses, Joshua, and Caleb. God described Caleb as having “a different spirit” or “a different attitude” in the New Living Translation.

What set Caleb apart? It wasn’t just obedience, it was belief. He believed that God would do what He promised, even when others were overcome by fear. And belief, as Jesus explains in John 6:40, is at the heart of doing God’s will: “For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life.”

In the New Testament, belief in Jesus is consistently described as the defining mark of those who belong to God. It is belief, not works, that makes the difference. Many may appear religious or perform acts in Jesus’ name, but as Matthew 7:22–23 warns, even the most impressive works are empty if they aren’t rooted in a personal relationship with Christ. “I never knew you,” Jesus says to those who trusted in their own deeds rather than His finished work on the cross.

Today, we are reminded that what truly sets us apart as children of God is simple, unwavering faith in Jesus. If your trust is in Him, His sacrifice, His resurrection, His righteousness, then you, like Caleb, are of a “different spirit.” You’re not defined by your performance, but by your position in Christ.

Reflection Question: Have you placed your full trust in what Jesus has done for you, or are you still trying to earn God’s approval through your own efforts?

Prayer: Jesus, Thank You for making a way for me to be accepted by the Father, not through what I’ve done, but through what You’ve done for me. Help me to walk daily in the confidence of that truth and to live with a spirit of faith like Caleb. In Jesus name, Amen.
