The Best Defense

From Today’s One Year Bible Reading Plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com

Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf. - Hebrews 7:25 (NLT)

The US Supreme Court decides cases that impact Americans’ day-to-day lives like none other. And there’s an exclusive group of about 65 lawyers, said to be among the top attorneys in the land, that actually get to argue cases before the court. These “top attorneys” are supposedly the best when it comes to advocating for the clients and causes they represent. And, when it comes to their fees, they’re at the top too, taking the phrase “The best lawyer money can buy” to a whole new level.

Now imagine knowing someone even better is on your side, defending you in the greatest court of all, the Court of Heaven.

That’s exactly what Hebrews 7:25 tells us. Jesus is our eternal advocate, our perfect lawyer who pleads our case before God every single moment. His intercession is powerful and unending. To intercede means to step in on behalf of someone else, to mediate and reconcile differences. When we think about the gap between a perfectly holy God and imperfect, sin-filled people like us, it can feel impossible to bridge. Yet Jesus does it for us. He shows the Father that the debt for our sins was paid in full by His sacrifice.

Not only is Jesus the best advocate money cannot buy, He is also the eternal payment for our sins, the one who saves us completely and forever. Because of Him, we do not have to live in fear of judgment or separation from God. We can approach the throne with confidence knowing Jesus stands in our defense.

Today, take comfort in this truth. You are represented by the best. Your case is secure. Your Advocate never stops pleading for you.

Reflection Question: How does knowing Jesus is your eternal advocate change the way you approach God and your daily challenges?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for being my perfect Advocate. Thank You for interceding on my behalf and paying the full price for my sins. Help me to live with confidence and peace, knowing You are always with me, defending, covering, and loving me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
