Strength in the Middle of the Storm
Today’s key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com
Take courage. I am here. Don’t be afraid. - Matthew 14:27 (NLT)
There are moments when following Jesus still leads us straight into difficulty. In Matthew 14, the disciples are doing exactly what Jesus told them to do when they find themselves battling wind and waves in the middle of the night. Obedience did not spare them from the storm. Instead, it placed them right in the middle of it. Yet this is where the heart of Jesus is revealed most clearly.
As the disciples strain against the wind, Jesus comes to them walking on the water. He does not calm the storm first. He speaks to their fear first. His words are simple and deeply personal: Take courage. I am here. Don’t be afraid. Before circumstances change, Jesus reminds them of His presence. Their safety is not found in calm waters, but in who is with them in the storm.
This truth echoes through the rest of today’s readings. In Genesis, Joseph finally reveals himself to his brothers. Years of pain, betrayal, and unanswered questions give way to healing and restoration. God was present even when the story did not make sense. What felt like loss was actually leading to redemption. In Psalm 18, David looks back and declares that God trained his hands for battle and strengthened him for the fight. God did not remove every challenge, but He supplied strength for every step.
Many of us want God to remove the storm immediately. But often He meets us in the middle of it. He reassures us. He strengthens us. He reminds us that fear does not get the final word. When Jesus steps into the boat, the wind dies down. But the greater miracle is that the disciples learn who He truly is.
Today, if you feel like you are fighting wind and waves, know this: Jesus sees you. He is not distant or unaware. He comes close and speaks peace to your heart before He speaks peace to your circumstances. You can take courage because He is here.
Reflection Question: Where do you need to listen for Jesus’ voice reminding you that He is with you in the middle of your storm?
Prayer: Lord, thank You that You meet me in the middle of fear and uncertainty. Help me to recognize Your presence even when the storm has not passed yet. Strengthen my faith and quiet my heart as I trust You with what I cannot control. I choose courage today because You are with me. In Jesus name, Amen.
