Rest For The Restless
From Today’s One Year Bible Reading Plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com
Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. - Hebrews 4:11 (NLT)
It almost sounds like a contradiction, does it not? Labor to enter rest. Work to stop working. But the writer of Hebrews is not trying to confuse us. He is trying to help us shift our focus from striving to trusting. That word “labor” in the original Greek actually means to be diligent or eager. So in other words, be intentional about finding rest in Jesus.
Now this is not the kind of rest where you kick up your feet and zone out. This is soul rest. The kind that anchors you when life is anything but peaceful. It is the kind of rest that only comes when you stop trying to fix everything on your own and start trusting in what Jesus has already finished.
Think about the Israelites. They saw miracle after miracle. God rescued them from slavery, split the sea wide open, and led them through the wilderness. Yet when it came time to step into the Promised Land, many of them froze. Doubt crept in. Fear took over. They had seen what God could do but struggled to believe He would do it again.
If we are honest, we can relate. We have seen God come through before. We have testimonies and answered prayers. But sometimes when a new challenge shows up, we forget what we already know. We stand at the edge of something good but hesitate at the riverbank of doubt.
Here is the truth. Resting in God is not passive. It takes faith. It takes reminding ourselves daily that His track record is perfect. He has never failed you, and He is not going to start now.
So today, be intentional. Choose rest. Choose trust. And believe that the same God who brought you this far will carry you the rest of the way.
Reflection Question: Where do you need to stop striving and start trusting God’s faithfulness in your life?
Prayer: Father, thank You for the rest You offer me through Jesus. Help me to stop leaning on my own strength and to fully trust in Your promises. Remind me of all the ways You have come through before, and fill my heart with faith to believe You will do it again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
