Power to Forgive

“He fell to his knees, shouting, ‘Lord, don’t charge them with this sin!’ And with that, he died.” Acts 7:60 (NLT)

Forgiveness can feel impossible when the pain is personal. When you’ve been misunderstood, betrayed, or deeply wounded, the idea of letting it go sounds more like surrendering your worth than setting yourself free. And if the person isn’t even sorry, the challenge feels even greater.

Stephen, in his final moments, didn’t cry out for justice. He asked for mercy on behalf of the very people who were killing him. His words echoed the heart of Jesus Himself: “Father, forgive them.” That kind of forgiveness doesn’t come from willpower. It comes from the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.

Forgiveness is never about excusing someone’s behavior. It’s about releasing the weight of it. It’s not about pretending the wound didn’t happen. It’s about choosing not to live trapped in the pain of it. When we forgive, we’re not saying the wrong was right. We’re saying we won’t carry it any longer.

The word forgive literally means to give beforehand. To give grace before someone asks. To offer release before it is deserved. That kind of love isn’t natural. It’s supernatural. Stephen was able to forgive because he was full of the Spirit. And the same Holy Spirit that filled Stephen is available to you. Forgiveness may not feel easy, but it is possible when we rely on God’s strength and not our own.

If there’s someone you’re struggling to forgive, you don’t have to do it alone. You can ask God to forgive through you, to help you see that person the way He does, and to give you the freedom that forgiveness brings.

Reflection Question: Who do you need to release into God’s hands today so that you can live free through the power of His forgiveness?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, I need Your help. I cannot forgive on my own. Fill me with Your presence and power. Help me to release those who have hurt me, not in my strength but in Yours. Let Your grace flow through me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
