More Than a Test
And Abraham said, âMy son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering:â so they went both of them together. â Genesis 22:8
Genesis 22 is one of the most dramatic and heart-wrenching moments in all of Scripture. God asks Abraham to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac, a request that seems unthinkable. But this moment was more than a test of blind obedience. It was a covenant moment. It was God placing a demand on a sacred promise.
When Abraham first entered into covenant with God in Genesis 15, blood was shed, and a binding agreement was formed. Abraham later sealed his part of that covenant through circumcision. Covenant is not a casual agreement; it is a life-binding relationship in which each party pledges their very best. When one gives, the other must reciprocate.
So, when God asked Abraham for his âonly son,â He wasnât testing for sport, He was making a legal request within the context of covenant. Abrahamâs willingness to offer Isaac gave God the legal right, by covenant terms, to offer His only Son in return. And just as
Abraham declared in faith that âGod will provide Himself a lamb,â God did exactly that, years later, on that very same mountain, in the form of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.
Abraham's faith wasnât only in God's provision, it was in Godâs covenant promise. He trusted that God would remain faithful, even if it meant raising Isaac from the dead (Hebrews 11:19). And because of that faith, we have the blessing of eternal life through Jesus, the Lamb God provided for us all.
Reflection Question: How can you respond in faith today, knowing God has already provided what you need through His covenant?
Prayer: Father, thank You for honoring covenant and for providing the Lamb, Your Son, Jesus. Help me to trust in Your faithfulness even when I donât understand the full picture. Strengthen my faith to believe in Your promises, just as Abraham did. In Jesus Name, amen.
