Led by the Head

From Today’s One Year Bible Reading Plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com

“He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.” - Ephesians 4:16 NLT

Have you ever heard the saying, “running around like a chicken with its head cut off”?

Well, I saw it happen once when I was about ten years old, and let me tell you, it was an image I won’t forget. My granddaddy grabbed a chicken from the yard, chopped off its head, and that poor thing kept running around, aimlessly flapping its wings and sprinting in circles. It was both disturbing and oddly fascinating to watch. Then my grandma fried it up in the kitchen, but though delicious, it was hard to eat considering what I had just witnessed.

Interestingly, a lot of us, even as believers, can find ourselves running around without a head, metaphorically speaking. But God never intended for us to live that way. He wants Jesus to be the Head of our lives, guiding us in everything we do. Ephesians 4:15 reminds us, “Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.”

When Christ is the Head, the entire body works together in harmony, growing, maturing, and full of love. Each part of the body has its own special work to do, and when we each do our part, it helps the whole body thrive. But the key here is love, without it, we’re just going through the motions. In 1 Corinthians 13, we’re reminded that no matter what we do, if it’s not done in love, it counts for nothing.

So today, let’s make a decision: with the Holy Spirit’s help, we’ll let Christ be the Head of our lives. As we do, we’ll see how love transforms everything around us, making our relationships, our work, and our life truly meaningful.

Reflection Question: Are there areas of your life where you need to surrender control and allow Christ to be the Head?

Prayer: Lord, thank You for being the Head of my life. Help me to surrender every area of my heart to You, and fill me with Your love so that I can walk in unity and grow with others in the body of Christ. Lead me in everything I do today, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
