His True Heart

From Today’s One Year Bible Reading Plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com

I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate God, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. You are eager to turn back from destroying people. - Jonah 4:2 (NLT)

Most people remember Jonah for the big fish story, dramatic, unforgettable. But the heart of the book of Jonah isn’t about the fish. It’s about God’s heart.

Jonah’s words in this verse are strikingly honest. He ran because he knew how God would respond, with mercy, compassion, and forgiveness. He didn’t run from fear of failure. He ran because he knew God’s mercy might extend to people he didn’t think deserved it.

This moment shows us something powerful: God’s heart is consistently for restoration. Even when people have messed up, God is eager to show grace. Even when we have failed, God’s love pursues us. Jonah’s insight into God’s character is just as true for us today.

You don’t have to perform to earn His love. You don’t have to be perfect to be accepted. God’s heart is already full of mercy, ready to restore, and eager to meet you right where you are.

Reflection Question: Is there an area in your life where you need to stop running and start trusting God’s heart of mercy?

Prayer: Father, thank You for being so full of grace and compassion. Help me to stop running from You and instead run to You. Let me see You for who You really are and rest in the truth of Your unfailing love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
