He Must Become Greater
Today’s key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com
He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less. - John 3:30 (NLT)
One of the most freeing things we can do in life is to let go of the need to be the center of attention. We live in a world that constantly pushes us to promote ourselves, to stand out, and to make sure everyone knows our achievements. But John the Baptist shows us a different way.
When people started comparing Jesus’ ministry to his own, John could have easily felt threatened. After all, he had spent his life preparing the way for the Messiah. But instead of being jealous or defensive, John said something incredible: “He must become greater; I must become less.”
John understood the true purpose of his life: it was to point people to Jesus. His role wasn’t to build a following for himself, but to prepare hearts for the One who was greater than all. And in that simple truth, he found peace and purpose.
We can learn so much from John’s example. It’s easy to get caught up in our own successes and want recognition, but when we choose to focus on making much of Jesus instead of ourselves, we experience true fulfillment. The beauty of the Gospel is that when we make Jesus the center, He helps us step into our true identity and purpose.
Today, let’s shift our perspective. Instead of striving for more attention or validation, let’s make room for Jesus to shine through us. The more we elevate Him, the more we realize that our worth is not in what we accomplish, but in who we belong to.
Reflection Question: How can you make more room for Jesus to shine in your life today? What are some ways you can shift the focus from yourself to Him?
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for being the center of our lives. Help us to step out of the way so that You can be seen more clearly through us. Teach us to find joy not in attention or recognition, but in pointing others to You. Increase in our lives, Lord, and help us to decrease. In Jesus Name, Amen.
