Greater Love

Captain Jeff Kuss was living his dream. As a Marine Corps pilot flying with the legendary Blue Angels, he had achieved what most only imagine. He was not just a skilled aviator, but also a kind, loyal, and loving husband and father. His life was full of purpose and promise. But one afternoon, everything changed in an instant.

During a routine practice flight, Jeff’s aircraft malfunctioned. He had only a split second to decide. He could have ejected and saved himself, but he saw what was below him, homes and families. Instead of bailing out, Jeff chose to stay with the jet, steering it away from the residential area to avoid a tragic loss of innocent lives. He laid down his own life to protect people he did not even know.

That kind of love is rare. It echoes the words of Jesus in John 15:13, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” But Jeff’s sacrifice goes beyond even that. He laid his life down for strangers.

Over two thousand years ago, Jesus did the same, but on a far greater scale. He laid down His life not just for strangers but for those who rejected Him. He offered Himself freely, knowing many would never recognize the depth of His love. Still, He gave everything so we could have everything, freedom from guilt, shame, fear, and eternal separation from God.

Today, we remember Jeff and all who have sacrificed in service. But above all, we remember Jesus. His act of love was not just heroic—it was eternal. And because of His sacrifice, we can live every day knowing we are fully loved and forever free.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for Your greater love. Thank You for offering Yourself for me so that I could live free and whole. Help me to walk in that love every day and share it with others in a way that honors Your sacrifice. In Jesus' name, Amen.
