Grace That Is Greater

Today’s key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com

I see him, but not here and now. I perceive him, but far in the distant future. A star will rise from Jacob; a scepter will emerge from Israel. - Numbers 24:17

Balaam came to curse, but he left speaking only blessing. Though Israel had failed repeatedly in their journey with God, grumbling, rebelling, and now compromising with Moabite idolatry, the Lord’s commitment to bless His people remained unshaken. Even as Balaam stood on the mountaintop, inspired by greed and pressure from King Balak, God took control of his mouth and turned every intended curse into prophecy and praise. God’s grace wasn’t deterred by Israel’s actions. His covenant love prevailed.

Yet, just after receiving these blessings, Israel fell into deep sin. At Acacia Grove, they turned from God to join themselves with the idols and immorality of Moab. Still, God didn’t abandon them. His discipline came swiftly, but so did a redemptive plan. Through the bold act of Phinehas, the plague was stopped, and peace was restored. This moment of judgment and mercy reminds us: God's holiness is real, but so is His grace.

It’s astonishing that even while Israel was wavering, God was already speaking of a “star rising from Jacob”, a prophetic picture of Jesus. Long before the manger, long before the cross, God had already chosen to redeem. Grace didn’t begin with us; it started with God. He blesses not because we earn it, but because He loves us.

If you’re feeling like your failures disqualify you from God's promises, remember Israel. If God can turn a curse into a blessing for a rebellious people, He can surely do it for you in Christ.

Reflection Question: Is there an area in your life you need to trust that God’s grace is greater than your failure?

Prayer: Father, thank You for blessing me even when I’ve failed You. Help me to rest in the assurance that Your love and grace are not based on my performance, but on Your eternal covenant. May I live in the joy and freedom of knowing that, in Christ, the curse has been broken. In Jesus Name, Amen.
