Goodness That Leads

Today’s key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com

Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. - Luke 5:27b (NLT)

When Jesus walked the earth, His presence disrupted every expectation about how God deals with people. Those who had only ever known a religious system built on performance were shocked to see who Jesus welcomed, and how. The sinners, the broken, the undeserving, these were the ones who encountered His goodness firsthand.

Peter’s response to the miraculous catch of fish is so human and so telling. Overwhelmed by grace he knew he didn’t earn, he cried out, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man.” Peter saw what many of us still struggle to grasp: God’s blessings have never been about our worthiness. They flow from His heart of grace.

Jesus didn’t correct Peter’s admission of sinfulness, He simply called him anyway. “Follow Me.” The call wasn’t based on Peter’s rĂ©sumĂ©. It was based on Jesus’ purpose.

The same was true for Levi. A tax collector, despised, wealthy, and likely corrupt, dropped everything to follow Jesus at a single invitation. Why? Because when grace meets you in the middle of your mess, something changes. It draws you in. That’s what Romans 2:4 means when it says that God’s kindness leads us to repentance.

You’re not being invited to follow a harsh judge, but a Savior who rewards you with grace before you even move. That’s the gospel. That’s Jesus.

Reflection Question: Have you ever hesitated to follow Jesus fully because you felt unworthy of His goodness? What might change if you truly believed His grace came first?

Prayer: Jesus, thank You that Your call to follow is rooted in Your goodness, not my performance. Help me to lay down my striving and receive the grace You freely give. Lead me, guide me, and let me walk in joyful response to Your love. In Jesus Name, Amen.
