Following the Blessing

“God had richly blessed Obed-Edom.” — 1 Chronicles 26:4b (NLT)

Imagine receiving an unexpected blessing so overwhelming that it changes everything in your life. That’s what happened to Obed-Edom. This man, an outsider by birth, had the Ark of the Covenant temporarily placed in his home, and the result was nothing short of extraordinary. His entire household was blessed in ways that everyone around him took notice.

Obed-Edom’s story begins with a knock at the door from King David’s men. The Ark of the Covenant, a symbol of God’s presence, needed a place to stay temporarily. David, having learned the consequences of mishandling the Ark, was careful in choosing a location for it. Obed-Edom, though not of Israelite descent, was chosen to house this sacred symbol of God’s power. What followed was an outpouring of blessings so rich that Obed-Edom couldn’t ignore it. His family, his home, his entire livelihood flourished.

In the same way, God's presence in our lives brings His blessings. Just like Obed-Edom, we too can experience the transformative power of God's presence. Obed-Edom didn’t take this blessing for granted. He recognized that the source of his newfound prosperity was the Ark itself—the tangible presence of God. So, Obed-Edom chose to follow that blessing and moved to Jerusalem, where he and his family continued to serve God at the Temple.

As followers of Christ, we too carry the blessing of God’s presence with us. Romans 8:10 reminds us that salvation is near, it’s in our hearts and in our mouths. Through Christ, we experience the same abundant blessing that Obed-Edom did, and we are invited to walk in it every day.

Reflection Question: How can you actively seek and welcome God’s presence into your life today?

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your abundant blessings. Help me to recognize and cherish Your presence in my life. May I walk closely with You, knowing that Your presence is the source of every blessing. Guide me to live in a way that honors You and leads others to Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
