Facing Your Giants
Today’s key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com
And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us! - 1 Samuel 17:47 (NLT)
There’s just something about cheering for the underdog, right? Whether it’s a last-minute touchdown or a surprise comeback story, we love seeing someone rise above the odds. That’s probably why the story of David and Goliath never gets old. Every time I read it, I find myself rooting for David like it’s the first time all over again.
But beyond the drama and the unlikely victory, there’s some real truth we can hold onto when we’re up against giants in our own lives.
First, David knew who he was in covenant with. When he referred to Goliath as “this uncircumcised Philistine,” he wasn’t just throwing shade, he was reminding everyone of the covenant between God and Israel. David knew that covenant meant protection, provision, and victory. And guess what? Through Jesus, you and I have an even better covenant, one that’s unbreakable and full of grace.
Second, David remembered his past victories. He hadn’t faced a giant like Goliath before, but he had faced a lion and a bear, and God came through then. Take a moment to think back on your own life. Can you remember the times God showed up? He’s the same God today as He was then.
Third, David picked up five smooth stones. That wasn’t just a strategic move, it’s a beautiful picture of grace. In Scripture, the number five often represents God’s unearned favor. David walked onto that battlefield, not alone, but covered in the grace of God.
Whatever your “giant” looks like today, whether it’s fear, lack, sickness, or something else, you don’t face it alone. You’re in covenant with a victorious God, and His grace is more than enough.
Reflection Question: What past victories can you remember that remind you of God’s faithfulness today?
Prayer: Father, thank You for being with me in every battle. Help me to remember that I have a covenant with You through Jesus. Strengthen my faith, remind me of Your past victories, and let Your grace go before me. In Jesus Name, Amen.
