Cleansed by Grace

Today’s key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com

For I am the Lord your God. You must consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. - Leviticus 11:44 (NLT)

In Leviticus 11, we find a detailed list of animals that are either clean or unclean according to the Mosaic law. These laws were part of God’s covenant with His people, setting them apart as holy. They were meant to guide Israel in maintaining purity before God, ensuring they lived distinct and consecrated lives. Yet, as we read through these laws today, we can easily get lost in the details and miss the deeper message.

At the core of these regulations was God’s call for holiness. His holiness, however, wasn’t something that could be achieved by avoiding certain foods or practices, it was a reflection of His perfect nature. The Israelites were called to reflect that holiness, but in their own strength, they couldn’t.

This is where grace comes in. As we move from the Old Testament to the New, we see how Jesus fulfills all the ceremonial laws and offers us a way to be truly cleansed. The Old Testament laws were a shadow, pointing to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who made us holy through His death and resurrection. His grace is what truly cleanses us, not our efforts, not our works, but His blood that was shed for us. Through Jesus, we are made clean and holy, no longer defined by what we eat or what we touch, but by the grace we’ve received.

In Mark 5, Jesus encounters two people in desperate situations, a woman with a bleeding condition and a father grieving the death of his daughter. In both cases, Jesus brings restoration. He doesn’t focus on their cleanliness according to the law; He responds to their faith. His grace is enough. Just as the woman was healed by touching His robe, we, too, are made whole by simply reaching out to Him in faith.

Reflection Question: What areas of your life are you trying to clean up on your own, rather than trusting in the grace that Jesus offers?

Prayer: Lord, thank You for cleansing me with Your grace. I recognize that I am made holy not by my works, but through Your sacrifice. Help me to live in the freedom of Your grace, trusting You to purify my heart and life. In Jesus name, Amen.
