Caught in Providence

Today’s key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com

Give justice to the poor and the orphan; uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute. - Psalm 82:3

Sometimes, we expect to face the consequences for our mistakes, especially when we’ve messed up. We may even brace ourselves for judgment, assuming that God is up there just waiting for us to slip up so He can throw the book at us. But that’s not how our loving Heavenly Father operates.

Retired judge Frank Caprio from Providence, Rhode Island became well-known for his compassionate approach to the people who came before him in court. Rather than handing out harsh sentences, he often extended mercy, reducing fines or dismissing cases altogether. It wasn’t because he ignored the wrongs done, but because he valued restoration and grace. People left his courtroom not just with a lighter sentence, but with a word of encouragement to keep moving forward. Judge Caprio’s loving antics became famous on YouTube through Caught in Providence.

This idea of mercy reminds me of how God treats us. In the Old Testament, we see God’s justice on display. But in the New Testament, through the cross of Jesus, God’s mercy shines brightest. Jesus took on the punishment we deserved, allowing us to experience God’s grace instead of wrath. So when we find ourselves in moments of failure or guilt, we can call out to God, knowing that we are caught in His Providence, His divine care and guidance.

Today, if you’re feeling weighed down by mistakes or past failures, remember that God’s mercy is available to you. You don’t have to face judgment alone. His arms are open, ready to welcome you with grace and love.

Reflection Question: How can you lean into God’s mercy and grace today, if you feel like you are carrying the weight of your mistakes on your own?

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your endless mercy and love. When I feel undeserving or overwhelmed by my failures, remind me that I am never outside Your grace. Help me to rest in Your forgiveness and walk in the freedom that only You can provide. In Jesus Name, Amen.
