Bless You
Todayâs key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com
May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace. - Numbers 6:26 (NLT)
Have you ever stopped to think about why we say âBless youâ when someone sneezes? Siri will tell you it dates back to Pope Gregory the Great during a plague outbreak, when sneezing was a sign of potential illness. Others simply associate it with good manners or cultural tradition. But in Scripture, blessing goes far beyond polite custom, itâs a powerful, God-ordained act.
In Numbers 6:22â27, God instructs Moses to have Aaron and his sons speak a specific blessing over the people of Israel. This âPriestly Blessingâ wasnât wishful thinking, it carried the full authority and power of God. When spoken in His name, God said, âI myself will bless them.â It included protection, favor, grace, peace, and wholeness, all aspects of the Hebrew word shalom.
Today, as New Covenant believers, we have been made priests in Christ (1 Peter 2:9). That means we donât have to be descendants of Aaron to speak Godâs blessing, we have that right and responsibility through Jesus. And the blessing we carry isnât limited to health after a sneeze. Itâs salvation, which in the Greek (sozo) means to be saved, healed, delivered, protected, and made whole.
Imagine the impact we could have if we began to speak blessing over our families, our friends, even our coworkers. Rather than reacting with criticism or frustration, what if our first response was to declare peace and favor? Just like Aaron, we can be confident that God will back our words with His power when we speak His promises.
Reflection Question: How can you intentionally speak Godâs blessing over someone in your life today?
Prayer: Father, thank You for making me part of Your royal priesthood through Jesus. Help me use my words to bless others, bringing Your peace, favor, and wholeness into their lives. Teach me to be bold in speaking Your truth and love. In Jesus Name, Amen.
