The Water of Purification
Today’s key verse is taken from the daily Bible reading plan at BibleInAYearOnline.com
To remove the defilement, put some of the ashes from the burnt purification offering in a jar, and pour fresh water over them. - Numbers 19:17 (NLT)
In the Old Testament, God gave specific instructions for purification after defilement, particularly after touching a dead body. One such instruction involved a red heifer whose ashes were used to purify people. The process was detailed, and those who were involved in the purification ceremony had to undergo cleansing as well. The water of purification was a tangible symbol of God’s holiness and His desire to restore His people to purity.
In the midst of this ceremonial process, we see an important truth: restoration and purification come only through God. The ashes from the red heifer were mixed with water, and the ceremony pointed to the fact that true cleansing could not be achieved by human effort alone. It required the act of God, symbolized through the sacrifice of the red heifer, which foreshadowed the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
As believers today, we no longer rely on the ashes of a heifer or the purification water of the Old Testament. Through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, we are purified and restored. His blood, shed for us, removes our sin and defilement once and for all. We are washed clean, not by rituals or actions of our own, but through the grace of God in Christ.
This grace, freely given to us, allows us to stand before God, cleansed and redeemed. We don’t need to fear the defilement of sin; God’s grace is sufficient to purify us, and His forgiveness is always available.
Reflection Question: Is there any areas of your life you need God’s purification and restoration today and how can you rest in the grace of His forgiveness?
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the sacrifice of Jesus that has purified me from all sin. Teach me to walk in Your holiness and to trust Your grace in every area of my life. Help me rest fully in Your forgiveness. In Jesus Name, Amen.
